Union membership up, but density down slightly, as Work Choices presents new challenge

Union membership numbers have increased to more than 1.9m - the highest level since 1998 - but union density has continued to decline, reaching a new low of 22.4%. Trend data produced by academic David Peetz, though, is positive for unions, as it shows the latest membership increase is the biggest since 1989 and that the decline in density has almost been arrested.

ALP gives broad outline of unfair dismissals policy, as current protections end

On the eve of Work Choices eliminating all unfair dismissal protection for the bulk of Australian workers and making it easy for even larger firms to sack at will, the Federal Opposition has released a broad outline of its plan to remodel dismissal laws, while the Prime Minister has warned disruptive employees that "they may not find it as easy to remain".
