The Electrical Trades Union (ETU) is the largest union representing over 60,000 members in the electrical, energy and power industries. ETU members also work in the communications, contracting, manufacturing, mining, rail, aerospace and transport industries.

The ETU NSW/ACT Branch has been in operation for over 100 years, representing the interests of electrical workers in the state, and fighting hard to improve the wages and working conditions of its members. The ETU is a democratic organisation that is run by the members, for the members.

This is an exciting, fast-paced dynamic and creative role where your skills can have a real impact on the lives of electrical workers and their communities. You will get fantastic exposure to union campaigning, political processes and industrial relations, as well as helping shape a bright future for ETU members.

On a normal day you might be visiting worksites, events, rallies and meeting with organisers and delegates to capture photos, videos and interviews to support your communication pieces, or working in the office developing and editing content.

This role is crucial in the creation of ETU NSW/ACT communications materials across a range of media and platforms. You will be responsible for creating, developing, coordinating and distributing print, digital, social media and other content types as required.

The successful applicant will be a creative thinker, an excellent communicator and adept in developing effective messaging to aid in ETU campaigns. You must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to think on your feet.

This role will report to the Strategic Communication and Engagement Specialist on a day-to day basis and is based in the Sydney Office.

Key responsibilities

• Write, develop and publish digital and print member communications such as magazines, newsletters, social media posts, member emails, stickers etc that support the aims and goals of the organisation.

• Drive the development of creative content for the ETU NSW/ACT social media channels and website.

• Create member-driven content including through attendance at worksites, training, rallies and events to talk to members, collect stories, take photos and collect video footage.

• Develop relevant content for the ETU NSW/ACT website.

• Maintain a working knowledge of emerging trends in communications and social media and report on ways to keep pace with the changing audience needs and platforms.

• Generate proactive media opportunities to promote the ETU, share member stories, expose worker abuses and contribute to national campaigns.

• Monitor the media and respond to local media queries and relevant stories.

• Assist in writing press releases and arranging press conferences and media events.

• Identify member spokespeople and brief all spokespeople including leadership.

• Build relationships with relevant journalists.

• Ensure all communications comply with brand guidelines and reflect ETU values.

• Assist with ETU merchandise and branded materials.

• Build relationships with other teams to provide communications assistance and ideas.

Essential skills and experience

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications, marketing, media, or similar, or demonstrated equivalent, relevant, industry experience.

• Highly self-motivated with an ability to work as a part of a team.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to write and edit compelling and concise content, articles, social media content and other forms of communication.

• Ability to translate complex information into more digestible and relatable content for different audiences.

• Comfortable using a wide variety of digital platforms from social media, to Microsoft Office, content management systems, content editing platforms and learning new platforms as they emerge;

• Excellent at developing and maintaining positive working relationships;

• Experience with social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

• Experience working in a high-volume, high-pressure environment supported by excellent problem-solving and organisational skills.

• Demonstrated ability to project manage and prioritise.

• Demonstrated experience and sound knowledge of Press/Digital print production processes.

• Confident in photo and video content creation and development.

• Relevant qualification and/or experience in strategic communications, journalism, campaigning or similar.

• An eye for design and experience using Canva or Adobe.

• A good understanding of the Australian media landscape.

• An understanding and commitment to human rights and union values.

Desirable

• Graphic design skills, or willingness to learn these skills.

• Salary offer will be commensurate with relevant skills and experience + 17.8% Employee Superannuation Contribution.
